Richard Graham became Gloucester’s MP on the 7th May 2010, with a majority of 2,420 and a swing of 8.9% from Labour to Conservative. He was re-elected in May 2015 with a majority of 7,251 and a swing of 5.4% from Labour to Conservative, and re-elected again in June 2017 with 50.3% of the vote.

Richard lives with his wife Anthea in Westgate, a stone’s throw from the club he plays cricket for – Gloucester City Winget CC. He also has three children.


 In Parliament

Richard has served as Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to Rt. Hon. Lord Howell of Guildford (Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office) from November 2010-12 and then PPS to Rt Hon Hugo Swire MP until 2014.

In Autumn 2012 Richard was appointed as the Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy to Indonesia, and to the ASEAN Economic Community in August 2015. As of January 2016, Richard is also Trade Envoy to Malaysia and the Philippines.

Richard is the Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Indonesia, China and Marine Energy on Tidal Lagoons. He served as a member on the Work and Pensions Select Committee from 2015 to 2017 and was elected onto the Select Committee for Leaving the EU in September 2017.

Before Parliament

Before entering Parliament, Richard worked for several years with John Swire & Sons in the Far East and Europe, mostly with their airline Cathay Pacific Airways. He became General Manager of Cathay Pacific in France and the Philippines as well as working in Jakarta, Hong Kong and London.

In 1986 he joined the Foreign Office and was posted to Kenya (as Second, and later First, Secretary) in the British High Commission. He was First Secretary in the British Embassy, Peking, as well as British Trade Commissioner China from Hong Kong and Consul for Macau during the period from Tiananmen Square towards the Handover of Hong Kong.

Richard then worked for Barings plc as Chief Representative of their China office from 1993 to 1995, and then as a Director of Baring Asset Management from 1995 to 2010, running their International and later Institutional Business. He was a director of The Greater China Fund Inc 1995-2005 and Chairman of the International Financial Services Ltd (IFSL) Pensions Group.

Richard was Councillor in the Cotswold District Council from 2003-7, and Chairman of the Overview and Scrutiny Committee from 2006-7.

Richard has been involved in charities much of his working life. He helped run the British High Commissioner in Nairobi’s Small Aid Projects in the mid 80s, financing small womens groups before such micro finance became fashionable and then was advisor, later director, of the charity Care for Children, the first Anglo-Chinese joint venture charity. Locally Richard is a trustee of the Gloucestershire Community Foundation, a member of Gloucester Rotary and a member of many voluntary groups.

    My reason for saking I have an item of uniform from the gulf war with the
    name richard graham on it plus rank markings in english and arabic.
